For the first 68 years of SUNY Canton’s history, greek life included a small number of fraternities and sororities, but it wasn’t until 1974 that a wave of national interest sparked new growth on campus, beginning with the founding of Delta Sigma Tau by freshman Shari Hall. After graduating, Shari continued her education at SUNY Oswego and built a successful marketing career. In 1992, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and became a fierce advocate for emerging treatments and patients’ rights. Following her passing in November 2024, sorority sister Valerie Hogben-Stastny-Diaz ’76 established the Delta Sigma Tau – Shari Hall Smith ’76 Memorial Scholarship to honor her legacy. The scholarship will support a senior campus leader who embodies Shari’s deep commitment to service.
