1985 Football Team
First Class A State Champion Football Team at Cheverus
The varsity football team of 1985 achieved a remarkable 9–1 regular season record, showcasing dominance and consistency. They are the first team to secure the Class A State Championship, a significant milestone in the program’s history, winning, at the time, by the largest margin in Class A history. This group of boys demonstrated exceptional teamwork and resilience, culminating in a victory over Lewiston in the state final. The championship game performance was a testament to their dedication, skill, and the leadership of their coaching staff.
An excerpt from the 1985 Football Banquet Program:
1985 was a historic year for Cheverus Athletics. Never before has a Cheverus team been a finalist for a State Football Title. Never before has any Maine Team won that Title by as large a margin. To all who have supported Cheverus Football – – – players, coaches, fans and benefactors, especially in the leaner years, we give thanks.

Kevin MacDonald '95
Baseball, Football & Basketball
To know Kevin was to love him. He was not only an exceptional athlete but also a person of remarkable character.
At Cheverus, Kevin was an All-State baseball player and received numerous honors including the Webber Energy/Randall & McAllister Award for Outstanding Athlete of the Year, and the Leadership Award for football, basketball and baseball — presented to a graduate who exemplifies leadership through actions, words, and presence.
Kevin was known as an outstanding pitcher and first baseman. He was named to the All-State First Team his senior year for first base. He was captain of the 1995 Andrews Post American Legion Team, which was the first team from Maine to make it to the American Legion World Series. In 2003, Kevin posthumously received the President’s Award from the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2011, the baseball field at Cheverus was officially dedicated as the Kevin MacDonald Memorial Field.
In addition to his baseball success at Cheverus, he was captain of the 1995 Andrews Post American Legion baseball team—the first Maine team to reach the American Legion World Series, where they finished fifth. He later coached the team to state championships in 1998 and 1999.
Ryan McCalmon '94
Cross Country, Indoor & Outdoor Track
At Cheverus, Ryan McCalmon was a dominant force in distance running. The cross country team won the state championship all four years he competed, with Ryan leading as the top runner for three of those seasons. As a junior and senior, he was the best in the state, winning the individual Class A title both years.
On the track, he earned four individual state titles—indoors in the 1,000m and mile, and outdoors in the 1,600m (twice). His time of 4:16.3 in the 1,600m during his senior year set a Class A state meet record. Ryan also played a key role in six team state championships—three in indoor track and three in outdoor track.
His talent earned him invitations to prestigious national events, including the Fifth Avenue Mile and the Millrose Games in New York City, which featured the nation’s top high school runners.
Ryan continued his running career at Stanford University, where he helped the team win back-to-back NCAA Division I cross country titles during his junior and senior years. In 1997, he won the college men’s 3,000m steeplechase at the historic Penn Relays. He later competed for the Boston Athletic Association, finishing 43rd in the 2013 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:25:13.
Now, 30 years after graduating, Ryan continues to embody the Jesuit values of service and justice. For the past 20 years, he has worked at Healthcare Financial, Inc., helping low-income and disabled Medicaid recipients access Social Security disability benefits. His work reflects the Cheverus mission of forming “people for others” and has made a lasting impact on the lives of the most vulnerable.
