Andrew Scavotto '96

Attorney Andrew Scavotto ’96 recently received the Melton M. Lewis Equal Justice Award from Legal Services of Eastern Missouri after helping achieve a landmark federal court victory on behalf of Missourians who had been illegally denied access to food assistance benefits. The lawsuit resulted in court orders requiring the state of Missouri to take significant remedial action to improve access to its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

After graduating from Burroughs, Andrew attended Vanderbilt University and Washington University School of Law. As a partner at Stinson LLP, he represents businesses in a variety of high-stakes disputes. He loves the regular — but always unique — challenges of investigation, problem-solving, communication, and advocacy. He also serves on Stinson’s pro bono committee and has always made pro bono work an important part of his practice. In addition to his recognition for the SNAP lawsuit, Andrew received Missouri Appleseed’s “Good Apple” Award in 2022 after helping research and draft legislation advancing a variety of successful criminal justice reforms.

Andrew believes Burroughs inspired and developed his appreciation for volunteer service through traditions such as the 8th grade community service week, May Project, and other activities. More broadly, he expressed gratitude for the school’s culture of building community, inclusion, and pursuing growth through diverse experiences and activities.

Andrew’s history of community involvement includes stints on the JBS Alumni Board and the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis. These days, he helps run a nonprofit that produces a long-running music festival, along with the weekly Saturday morning concerts at the Tower Grove Farmers Market. Andrew lives in St. Louis with his wife Courtney, a social worker and psychotherapist, and their two kids, Ian (11) and Miles (9).
