BY THE GRADUATES: Unshackled

Oh, the mountains between, between you and me. It fills me with dread at what lies ahead, Lord, I’m so lost.

Do I have what I need? To the answers I seek. The birds of the sky, fly free and fly high, so why can’t I?

Because I seem to forget the fate that you met. And the price that you paid, when you took my place.

Upon that cross, I gained the life that you lost. So why can’t I see that I am a child of God?

The answer’s you; it’s not me. I’ve always been free. Yet these shackles I wear are my own fear and despair. It’s time to break free.

Lord, can I trust in your plan? In how my story ends. I can’t skip ahead, so here take the pen out of my hands.

Because you know better than I, come, co-author my life. Every mistake that I made, you held the space for me to grow.

You wrote all the chapters, the before and the after. I’m just an actor, but you’re the director, so I’ll trust your script.

So let the storm break, for my house is on rock. Put me to the test, for you are enough.

You’ve seen the tears that I wept, the silent prayers that I kept. You don’t judge who I’m not, if I succeeded or I lost, but just as I am.

So take off my chains; I’m unbound and unafraid. For the battles that come, let thy will be done. I’m held by your grace.

Though the earth give way or mountains fall into the sea, I shall not fall. Though bows may break on shattered spears, how can I fear? When you are here.

You’ve seen the tears that I wept, the silent prayers that I kept. You don’t judge who I’m not, if I succeed or I lose, but just as I am.

So take off my chains, I’m unbound and unafraid. For the battles that come, let thy will be done. I’m held by your grace.
