Barry John Bacon ’84 was awarded the Distinguished Award of Uzima University by His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto, president of the Republic of Kenya, on January 30, 2026. The award recognizes Bacon for his leadership in global medical education, teaching, and mentoring in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Somaliland, Zambia, Angola, Guatemala, Peru, and Chuuk; his foundational support for Uzima University School of Medicine, including bedside ultrasound training, ECG interpretation, newborn resuscitation, Basic Life Support, and advanced cardiovascular life support instruction, and coordination of a weekly international lecture series; his humanitarian and peace building work through the Pokot Turkana Peace Initiative, supporting clinics, orphan care, water projects, and community development in conflict affected regions; and for his lifelong commitment to rural and underserved healthcare, both in Washington State and abroad.
