In a fitting tribute to a beloved coach, Washburn University is stepping up its game with a renovated baseball complex. Made possible by the generosity of baseball alumni and supporters – including alumni couple Chris and Megan Jones – this transformation not only enhances the student-athlete experience but also commemorates legendary Washburn baseball coach Steve Anson’s undeniable impact on Washburn’s athletics.
The Jones’ connection to Washburn runs deep. The couple first met in the halls of Henderson, where their college romance blossomed. Both were heavily involved in campus life – Chris as a Phi Delta Theta and dedicated baseball player and Megan as a Zeta Tau Alpha and member of the Dancing Blues.
“We actually went to the same grade school, junior high and high school, but our paths were destined to cross at Washburn,” Megan said.
After graduating, they founded the Jones Advisory Group, a highly-successful independent financial planning business in Topeka. Their success has enabled them to support Washburn in meaningful ways. In fact, Megan recently joined the Washburn foundation’s board of trustees, bringing her financial expertise to the foundation’s Investment Committee.
“It’s important for us to give back, not just financially, but also with our time and talents,” Megan said. “Washburn played a pivotal role in shaping who we are today.”
One impactful connection for the Jones’ was Coach Anson, Washburn’s winningest coach of all time.
“Coach Anson was more than just a coach; he was a mentor, a friend and an additional father figure to many of us,” Chris said. “He taught me about hard work and commitment – values that I carry with me to this day.”
Anson’s dedication to Washburn and the sport he loved will forever be etched into the fabric of the university. Anson’s unexpected death in 2014 left a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy continues to inspire – making it no surprise that the newly renovated baseball complex will be dedicated in his honor.
Improvements to the ball field were already under consideration, but following Anson’s passing, former player and chair of the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation board of directors Greg Greenwood, bba ’88, put out a call for donations. Several responded, with a particularly significant commitment from the Jones family.
Washburn’s Associate Athletic Director Matt Hutchinson says the renovations will provide modern amenities with a big impact on student athletes. Among many upgrades, the scoreboard and field lights will be replaced to facilitate later practices and, so students won’t have to miss class. Additionally, new fencing will protect the outfield and an upgraded field will enable post-season play.
“When it’s done, this will be one of the best complexes in the country.” Hutchinson said.
“We saw Coach Anson on a regular basis, even after we graduated. He meant so much to Chris. And so then, by proxy, I loved him, too. That’s one of the reasons why it’s so important for us to give back in Coach Anson’s name.” Megan said.
